How to write stories in TAT
Thematic Apperception Test consists of 11 slides and a blank side where the candidate needs to perceive the image shown in each slide and frame a story regarding that within 4 minutes where additional 30 seconds is given for observing the picture. Here are some of the methods to approch TAT:
1) Utilise 30 seconds completely for observing every minute detail in the picture shown and organise the thoughts very well.
2) Any story which is logical, practical and relatable is fairly acceptable and considered a good story.
3) Do not introduce negativities or problems in the story if it is not clearly visible, because it is just like digging a pit and then filling it.
4) Do not run away from disturbing elements in the story like any heinous crime or mishap just perceive it as it is and prepare your action plan to come to a good conclusion. Here what most of the candidates do is they mould it into a drama or movie shooting which is highly unacceptable.
5) Most of the candidates prefer protaganist of the story to be either an engineer or a doctor instead which what one can do is read and have knowledge about multiple professions of day to day life like farmer, technician, architect and so on so that you never run out of ideas in story.
6) The story should be free from wishful thinking and reward seeking behaviour because this itself is a big RED flag in TAT.
7) Do not need to insert social themes in every story until it is evident and required, otherwise it would be considered a vague perception.
8) Dont considered you protaganist to be an ALPHA, just keep his/her role and actions as that of a responsible and smart person.
9) One should practice stories to improve his writing speed and handwriting so that it is readable, practicing limitless stories won't show much change until you work on our imagination, thoughts, ideas and actions.
10) Try avoid writing your personal story or an incident related to your life in the blank story because, the assessor would assess the candidate on the basis of previously written 11 stories, so a grat last story wont make an impact if rest of them are illogical or full of wishful thinking.
11) Instead blank story is a great opportunity for the candidate to reflect his/her limitless imagination, so avoid preparing in advance.
12) In TAT one must work upon the spontaneity and organising the thoughts and ideas in a structured way.
13) Avoid adjectives in the description of the protagonist instead focus on his/her actions that would be a honest description that assessors would judge upon.
14) Don't write too lengthy stories focus on what has led to the situation, curently what is going and the outcome of the story.
15) Do not introduce much technicalities in stories unless needed.
16) Again no story is right or wrong and hopefully this blog would help you to rectify your stories on your own in terms of the requirements of an acceptable story.
These points are my personal opinions and learnings which I have gathered through youtube over years with which some of the readers might agree while some would hold a discord but as per my believe there are NO shortcuts and tips to clear, one need to put time, work upon, build strong intelligence and logical idea thinking and practice to excel in TAT.
